Alberni Pacific Railway

The Alberni Pacific Railway is a heritage railway operator based in Port Alberni , British Columbia , Canada . It operates a route that runs from the Port Alberni waterfront to the McLean Mill, a historic sawmill. The track width is 1435 mm ( standard gauge ).

Routes traveled

The Alberni Pacific Railway's trains use a 3.9-kilometer section of the otherwise closed Parksville-Port Alberni railway and the siding that connects the McLean Mill to this line.

During the season from late June to early September, two pairs of trains run on Thursdays and Saturdays, and one pair of trains on Fridays and Sundays. The trips are offered in conjunction with a tour of the historic sawmill. The Museum Railroad's trains begin at Port Alberni Station, built in 1912, and are 35 minutes' drive from the McLean Mill National Historic Site .

The Baldwin steam locomotive No. 7, and the Alco RS-3 No. 8427. The train set consists of two closed passenger cars and three covered summer carriages . The underframes of the passenger cars come from the Canadian National Railway's cabooses , the car bodies were newly built.

Steam locomotives

# 2 (type shay)
  • No. 2 is a 42-ton Shay steam locomotive with two bogies built by Lima Locomotive Works . It was restored in September 2016.
  • No. 7 is one of Baldwin built, 90-ton saddle tank - tank locomotive wheel arrangement 1'D1 '. This machine hauled the trains of the Alberni Pacific Railway in September 2016.
  • No. 112 is also a saddle tank tank locomotive built by Baldwin , but only weighs 75 tons and has a 1'C1 'wheel arrangement. The restoration, which was ongoing in September 2016, was still in the early stages.

Diesel locomotives

  • No. 11 is a General Electric built 45 ton diesel-electric locomotive powered by a Cummins 220 hp diesel engine. The locomotive was refurbished operationally in 2014.
  • No. 8427 is an Alco RS-3 with a weight of 120 tons and an output of 1600 hp. It is currently in operation. The 8427 was built in 1953 by the American Locomotive Company (Alco) for the Canadian Pacific Railway (CP). It was founded around 1979 by Crown Forest Ltd. Purchased to operate timber haulage in Ladysmith . The Western Vancouver Island Industrial Historical Society acquired them around 1994/95. This locomotive is probably the last remaining RS-3 that the CP procured.
