Albernoa is a place and a former municipality ( freguesia ) in Portugal in the district and district of Beja with 110.4 km² area with 758 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011). This results in a population density of 6.9 inhabitants / km². Albernoa is mentioned by the writer José Saramago in his book “Viagem a Portugal” (The Portuguese Journey).
Albernoa is an Arabic name and would translate to heartland. In this area there was already a village with a population at the beginning of the Christian reconquest in the 13th century under King D. Sancho II.
On September 29, 2013, the municipalities of Albernoa and Trindade were merged to form the new municipality of União das Freguesias de Albernoa e Trindade . Albernoa is the seat of this newly formed community.
