Albert Michael Beck (born April 15, 1937 in Hellbühl , Canton Lucerne) is the founder of the World Money Fair coin fair and founder of the MünzenRevue magazine .

Life

After an apprenticeship as a printer and typesetter, Beck worked as a proofreader and auditor before he decided to make up for his Matura in evening studies . He studied at the Philosophical-Historical Faculty of the University of Basel and taught at the General Trade School Basel, later at the School of Applied Arts and until his retirement at the School of Design .

During the “silver boom” of 1967/8 he founded the MünzenRevue to satisfy the growing interest in coins. The MünzenRevue developed into one of the most important magazines for collectors. Albert Beck was the owner and editor-in-chief of the magazine until August 2000. After that, Gietl Verlag took over support and production. Albert Beck remains associated with the MünzenRevue as an editor.

Another development during the silver boom was the many local coin exchanges that were set up everywhere. Albert Beck was a founding member of the Basel Coin Exchange. As an editor who was not only interested in his own event, he quickly saw that the many stock exchanges were competing with one another. He initiated the establishment of the Organization of European Coin Exchanges (OEMB). He himself was present at the founding meeting on June 26, 1971 as a founding member. A date for the Basel trade fair was set at the beginning of the year, in mid-January.

Thanks to the good contacts that Albert Beck had with the various mints through the MünzenRevue, the Basel Coin Fair, today World Money Fair, developed into a showcase for the mints. In 1981 Beck convinced the Royal Canadian Mint to present itself to German collectors at the Basel coin fair. This made it the first foreign mint to present itself at a coin exchange. Around 50 state mints now come to this event every year to present their latest products.

In 1993 Beck was appointed an executive member of the newly formed "Olympic Philately, Numismatic and Memorabilia Commission" of the International Olympic Committee ( IOC ).
