Albert Doillon

Albert Doillon (born June 13, 1918 in Melincourt , † February 23, 2004 in Paris ) was a French Romance scholar and Argot researcher .

life and work

Doillon graduated from high school in Besançon and graduated from the École nationale de la France d'Outre-Mer . He was a colonial official in Indochina and Cameroun for 15 years , and from 1960 a ministerial official in Paris. In 1973 he retired.

By reading the French Etymological Dictionary (FEW) and the Dictionnaire historique des argots français by Gaston Esnault , he came to the scientific occupation with the argot . In 1974 he founded the association “Amis du lexique français. Les mots en liberté ”(ALFRAL), published a Dictionnaire permanent du français en liberté (A – C, 1974–1988) and joined the“ Société des gens de lettres de France ”(mediated by François Caradec) ( SGLF), which awarded him a special prize in 1982. In 1990 he received the Prix Alfred-Verdaguer of the Institut de France .

His work remained unfinished. Much was sent by subscription (“Amis du lexique français”). It was only shortly before his death that some of his material appeared in five thematic volumes in bookshops.
