The Albert pygmy owl ( Glaucidium albertinum , syn .: Taenioglaux albertinum ), also called Albert pygmy owl , is a species of bird from the family of real owls (Strigidae).

It is very similar to the Cape pygmy owl and was at times combined with it.

It occurs in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and in Rwanda ( Nyungwe Forest ).

The distribution area includes a small forest area in the Albert-Graben (Albertine Rift) about 2000 m above sea level.

description

The Albert dwarf owl is about 20 cm tall and weighs around 73 g. The head is relatively large with no visible tufts of ears. The top is maroon with cream-colored dots on the forehead, crown and nape of the neck, the wing covers have cream-colored bandages. The underside is light to white with dark spots, especially on the flanks. The tail is brown with large white spots, the eyes are pale yellow.

It differs from the Cape pygmy owl in its dots and the rather single-colored back plumage.

Way of life

No information is available on food and breeding season.

The blue owl is considered endangered ( vulnerable ).
