Album-oriented rock

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Album-oriented Rock (AOR) is a radio station format originating from the USA . It is primarily aimed at a male target group between the ages of 18 and 45.

The first AOR stations broadcasting on VHF radio emerged in the USA from around 1967, when LPs increasingly also contained long pieces of music. LPs from the genre of rock music were no longer just a collection of previous single hits and insignificant LP fillers, but also contained artistically expressive tracks. Because of the often long playing time of these tracks, they did not receive airplay at the usual Top40 stations . The AOR stations filled this gap.

AOR is a music-oriented format. Information and news are in the background. Moderations usually have a strong connection to music. The playlist is rock music-oriented and very long with 1500 to 2000 tracks. Tracks by lesser-known performers and from various rock music directions are also played, with current and older pieces being taken into account. It also broadcasts many long pieces from music albums that are less known and never released as a single. Channels with AOR format are mainly found in metropolitan areas with a high density of channels, as they can distinguish themselves from other channels by a clearly defined target group. Over time, some specializations of the format have developed: hard rock / heavy rock, classic rock and soft rock .

The AOR format is less common in Germany. One of the well-known AOR stations in Germany is the Rock Antenne , a private radio station from Bavaria.
