In addition to the question of gender-specific sentencing for homicides, his legal sociological work deals with an ethnomethodological representation of criminal proceedings as theater. In his work on the social history of (legal and illegal) drugs in Europe, he interprets attitudes towards drugs against the background of Norbert Elias' theory of civilization ; in later works he analyzes drug policy as an example of a control society in the sense of Gilles Deleuze . Together with his project team, he devoted three books to the forms of control society as part of a trilogy that deal with pleasure, money and work as central social control mechanisms.
