Aldonic acids
Aldonic acids belong to the group of sugar acids , which are formed during the oxidation of the aldehyde group of an aldose . The resulting carboxylic acids therefore have the structure HOOC– (CHOH) n -CH 2 OH. Oxidation of the terminal hydroxyl group instead of the terminal aldehyde group leads to uronic acid .
Aldonic acids are usually synthesized by the oxidation of sugars with bromine . Aldonic acids are found in many biological systems.
