history

Aldwych Theater

The name Aldwych comes from the old English eald and wic , which means "old trading town" or "old market place". The earliest written mention of Aldewich was in 1211. In the 7th century, an Anglo-Saxon village and trading center called Lundenwic existed at this location , about one and a half kilometers west of the ruins of the Roman Londinium (Lundenburh) . When the city of Lundenburh moved back within the Roman city walls, the old settlement of Lundenwic was given the name Aldwych .

Today's street was built in 1905 as a result of a district redevelopment project. The London County Council demolished the run-down part of the city and the numerous narrow streets were replaced by the new main arteries of Aldwych and Kingsway. From 1906 to 1952 the Kingsway tram tunnel ran under the western part of Aldwych .
