The Novello Theater is a West End theater on Aldwych Street , in Westminster , London . From 1913 to 2005 it was known as the Strand Theater .

history

The theater was built alongside the Aldwych Theater on either side of the Waldorf Hilton, London , both designed by WGR Sprague . The theater was opened as the Waldorf Theater by The Shubert Organization on May 22, 1905 and renamed the Strand Theater in 1909 . In 1911 it was renamed again, the Whitney Theater and in 1913 the Strand Theater . In 2005, it was renamed Novello Theater by its owner ( Delfont Mackintosh Theaters ), based on Ivor Novello , who lived in the apartment above the apartment between 1913 and 1951.

The black comedy Arsenic and Old Lace (Arsenic and Old Lace) had in the 1940s, a total of 1,337 performances, and sailor watch out (Sailor Beware!) Ran from 1955 to 1231 performances. Stephen Sondheim's musical A Funny Thing Happened the ancient Romans (A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum) was opened in 1963 and ran for nearly two years. The comedy No Sex Please, We're British opened here in 1971 and ran here for over 10 years of its 16-year existence until it moved to the Garrick Theater in 1982.

The theater was extensively renovated in 1930 and the early 1970s. It was added to the Grade II list of English cultural heritage on July 20, 1971 . After The Rat Pack: Live From Las Vegas in 2005, the year of its 100th anniversary, the theater underwent major renovations. The current seating capacity is 1105.

The theater was on 8 December 2005 with the annual London season of the Royal Shakespeare Company reopened, which in March 2006 with the four-week cycles of want What you (Twelfth Night), The Comedy of Errors (The Comedy of Errors), A Midsummer Night's Dream ( A Midsummer Night's Dream) and As you like it ended (As you like it).

In 2006 the theater hosted the London premiere of the Broadway musical Footloose, which starred Cheryl Baker . On November 11, Footloose ended with the return of the Royal Shakespeare Company to the 2006-7 season, after which the Broadway musical The Drowsy Chaperone celebrated its European premiere on June 6, 2007. The London production included Elaine Paige , Bob Martin , Summer Strallen and John Partridge . The London production closed after just two months on August 4, 2007 after it did not attract an audience despite positive reports.

On 10 July 2007, just three days after the announcement of Drowsys premature closure, it was announced that the theater is home to a new musical version of the MGM film Susan Desperately Seeking ... (Desperately Seeking Susan) with music by Blondie and Deborah Harry directed by Angus Jackson and would be with Emma Williams and Kelly Price . The musical was performed for the first time on October 16, 2007 (originally October 12, 2007) and presented for its world premiere on November 15, 2007. But just two weeks after opening, the show announced its final appearance for December 15, 2007 after a critical argument after playing for just four weeks of previews and four weeks of open runs and losing over £ 3.5 million.

A quick replacement was the cross-West End transfer of Shadowlands from the Wyndham's Theater , which began on 21 December 2007 for a 12-week run until 25 February, 2008. Producer Phil McIntyre opened ZooNation's adaptation of the musical Into the Woods on March 26, 2008, entitled Into the Hoods .

The Novello Theater is one of 40 theaters in the Great West End Theater 2012 DVD documentary series presented by Donald Sinden .
