Aleh Hulak

Aleh Hulak Mikalayevich (Belarusian Алег Мікалаевіч Гулак, Russian Олег Николаевич Гулак, Oleg Nikolayevich Gulak * 1. September 1967 , Schilitschi, Byelorussian SSR , USSR ) is a Belarusian lawyer and human rights activist . He is chairman of the Belarusian Helsinki Committee .

Life

Aleh Hulak was born into a family of teachers. In 1989, he completed a degree in law at the Belarusian State University in Minsk from. He got married and went to Pinsk . There he worked from 1990 to 1996 as a legal advisor in various companies and commercial organizations.

In 1996 he became a member of the Belarusian Helsinki Group and co-founded the Pinsk regional association. Since 1997 he has worked for the organization as a lawyer and later also as its executive director. In 2007 he became deputy chairman and in 2008 chairman of the Belarusian Helsinki Committee .

Aleh Hulak provided legal support to many people in court to protect their rights. He took part in campaigns for free elections and other protests.

Awards

2016: Franco-German Prize for Human Rights and Rule of Law from the French and German Foreign Ministries.
