Aleksandre (Kacha) Lomaia ( Georgian ალექსანდრე (კახა) ლომაია ; born July 23, 1963 in Tbilisi , Georgian SSR ) is a Georgian politician . The engineer was Minister of Education and Science from February 2004 to November 2007. In the same month he became secretary of the National Security Council of Georgia.

life and career

In 1985 he graduated from the Polytechnic Institute in Tbilisi with a degree in hydraulic engineering with distinction. He then worked at the Tbilhidroproekti Institute in Tbilisi. In 1992 he completed postgraduate studies as a civil engineer in Moscow .

In 1991, Lomaia was sent to Moscow by Georgian President Zviad Gamsachurdia as the deputy representative of the country that had become independent; In the same year he was promoted to acting agent.

In 1995 he became the coordinator of the public and media program of the political foundation Eurasia Fund , which promotes democratic institutions and the private sector in the countries of the former Soviet Union. In 2000 he took over the management of the foundation in Georgia. In 2002 he moved to the Democracy Coalition organization as regional director . From 2003 he was managing director of the George Soros Foundation Open Society Georgia , which mentally prepared the rose revolution .

On February 17, 2004, the Georgian Parliament elected him Minister of Education and Science. On November 19, 2007, he was replaced in office by President Mikheil Saakashvili and appointed Secretary of the National Security Council of Georgia. According to an analysis by the International Crisis Group (ICG), he is one of the most influential people in the inner circle of the Georgian President.

In December 2008 Lomaia was appointed permanent representative of Georgia to the United Nations .

Lomaia is married and has two children. In addition to his mother tongue , he speaks Russian and English .
