Aleksanterinkatu

The Aleksanterinkatu (Swedish: Alexandersgatan , often simply: Aleksi ) is one of the main shopping streets in downtown Helsinki . Like the rest of the inner city, it was laid out by Carl Ludwig Engel and connects Senate Square in a westerly direction with Boulevard Mannerheimintie , but also continues in an easterly direction to the beach. It was named after the Russian Tsar Alexander I .

Along the road there are important economic institutions such as the headquarters of the Finnish department of Nordea Bank, the Finnish World Trade Center or the headquarters of the Stockmann company .

The intensive use of reddish Finnish granite for the pavement of the Aleksanterinkatu and the bases of the buildings is typical of downtown Helsinki. As with some other streets in Helsinki, there is a heating system below the Aleksanterinkatu that keeps the street free of snow and ice even at temperatures as low as −10 ° C. The heat comes from the district heating water draining off the surrounding buildings.

traffic

Tram lines 3, 4 and 7 run along the street . Otherwise, the western, more central part is traffic-calmed and only allowed for taxi and delivery traffic. In 2010 a tunnel (keskustan huoltotunneli) was completed under the street , to which the residents can each build their own connection. In the long term, all delivery traffic is to be moved to the tunnel.
