The Obermatt – Unter Zingel material cable car is a historic cable car in the Engelbergertal in central Switzerland , which is designed as a water ballast cableway .

Obermatt – Unter Zingel

The train is a two-lane two-cable aerial tramway that belongs to a family of mountain farmers. It connects the valley floor at Obermatt ( OW ) with the otherwise difficult-to-access Alp Unter Zingel ( NW ), west of it above the Zingelfluh, and crosses the Engelberger Aa in addition to the cantonal border . The track was built in 1923 by the Dallenwil blacksmith Remigi Niederberger . Except for the vehicles that were replaced in 1931, the runway is in its original condition at the time and is one of the last remaining water ballast runways. The Swiss cable car inventory published by the Federal Office of Cultureas an impressive testimony to the early phase of ropeway technology and the early company history of the Niederberger / Dallenwil company, attaches particular cultural and historical value to the facility .

The train manages without a prime mover. An approx. 200 l sheet metal tank is integrated in the rear walls of the gondolas, which is filled with water in the mountain station. Due to the difference in weight, this vehicle pulls the other, with which it is connected to the pull rope loop via the sheaves in the stations, upwards. The operator has to regulate the driving speed manually with a drum brake .

In 1999 the family of mountain farmers was able to purchase an inexpensive material ropeway from the Swiss Army , which was installed by the ropeway troops . The material ropeway operated by a diesel engine runs parallel to the Zingelbahn within 15 minutes from the Obermatt valley station to the higher Alp Zingel ( 1516  m above sea level ).
