Alepisaurus brevirostris is adeep-sea fish from the order of the lizard- fish relatives (Aulopiformes) that occurs around the world in all oceans between 68 ° N and 72 ° S to depths of 1590 meters.

The maximum length of the species is 0.96 meters, most of the adult specimens reach a length of about 70 cm. Alepisaurus brevirostris has an elongated body and a large, sail-like dorsal fin that is curved like a curve and without free-standing fin rays. A small adipose fin is present. It lies over the back of the anal fin. The caudal fin is forked. Alepisaurus brevirostris differs from Alepisaurus ferox in the shape of the dorsal fin, the more numerous dorsal fin rays and the shorter head. The head length is 12 to 17% of the standard length , the muzzle length a third of the head length. Alepisaurus brevirostris has a brownish-blackish back, the dorsal fin shows a horizontal row of white dots.
