The family first appears in Amsterdam in the 16th century, where they were active in commerce. In the following century they succeeded in entering the city ​​government of Amsterdam . In 1623 the family was elevated to the French nobility. The reason for this was the claim that the family came from the French nobility and was previously called De Halluin .
