Fredrick Alewijn

Frederick Alewijn (born January 18, 1737 in Amsterdam , † November 10, 1804 in Beemster ) was an Amsterdam regent of the 18th century.

biography

Frederik was born as the son of Amsterdam Schepen Dirk Alewijn, from the patrician family Alewijn , and Bregje Loten. After studying in Utrecht, he sat in the Vroedschap in Amsterdam from 1767 to 1795 . In 1772 he was appointed one of the Bewindhebber ( head, chairman ) of the Amsterdam Chamber of the Dutch East India Company . In 1787 he was one of the nine members of the government who were deposed by the patriot movement . After the suppression of this uprising, Alewijn was reappointed and elected mayor in 1789 and 1793 .

In 1758 Alewijn married Susanna Christina Huyghens (1737–1767) and after her death with Barbara Maria Fabricius (1744–1805). The second marriage had five children, including Mr. Frederik Alewijn (1775-1817) who founded the Opperdoes Alewijn family through his marriage to Margareta Christina Opperdoes (1780-1844) . Another daughter, Breghje Agatha Alewijn (1777-1853), married as the widow of Mr. Abraham Pieter van Notten, the future mayor of Amsterdam, Baron Mr. Pieter Alexander van Boetzelaer . Alewijn's son Willem Alewijn (1769–1739) was a soldier and was introduced to the new Dutch nobility in 1815 with the title Jonkheer . He was married twice, first to Maria Susanna Backer (1771–99) and then to Sophia Maria Agatha Huydecoper tot Nigtevecht (1772–1837).
