Backer (noble and patrician family)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Backer were a Dutch patrician and noble family .

history

The family's origins lie in the North Brabant Drunen , from where Cornelis Jorisz settled in Amsterdam in 1509 . His two great-grandchildren, both of whom sat in the Amsterdam city government , married the daughters of Willem Backer, and their descendants took on the maternal name Backer. In 1815 the oldest branch of the family was elevated to the new Dutch nobility with the title Jonkheer . Today the non-ennobled branches Backer van Leuven and the younger branch Backer still exist .
