Willem Cornelisz Backer
Willem Backer (born April 17, 1595 in Amsterdam , † October 5, 1652 ibid), Knight of St. Michael, was an Amsterdam regent of the Golden Age .
biography
Backer's parents were Cornelis Jorisz Backer and Grietge Willemsdr. In 1625 he came to the Amsterdam Vroedschap . Within this he belonged to the Calvinist minority. Backer held many magistrate posts throughout his life and was captain of the civil guard . In 1627 he married Bregitta Spiegel (1606–68), with whom he fathered eight children. In 1632 he was called in as an officer in the occupation of Nijmegen . Backer's first term as mayor was in 1639; others followed in 1642, 1645, 1647 and finally in 1651. Between 1640 and 1643 Backer acted as Bewindhebber ( head, chairman ) of the Amsterdam Chamber of the Dutch East India Company . In 1647 the Doge of Venice made him a knight. Between the years 1648 and 1650 he was a member of the States General . Backer left behind various manuscripts and writings about the deliberations in the States of Holland and genealogical writings about his family, which are now in the historical archive of the city of Amsterdam.
