Alex Garcia (born December 2, 1961 in San Fernando , California ) is a retired American heavyweight boxer .

amateur

Garcia became an amateur boxer after serving a prison sentence for manslaughter . In 1986 he won the US super heavyweight championship and was runner-up in Reno . On the way to the final he defeated Aziz Salihu from Yugoslavia, a bronze medalist and Baik Hyun-man from South Korea, a silver medalist at the Olympic Games prematurely. In the final battle, however, Garcia had no chance against the Cuban Teófilo Stevenson and lost himself prematurely.

professional

In 1987 he became a professional and received a lot of attention because of his above-average hitting hand and his skin color. In 1988 he lost once to one due to a laceration. He won the North American title of NABF in 1992 and was then listed in the top 10 by Ring Magazine even without known defeated opponents. Riddick Bowe offered him a title shot, but Garcia disagreed with the financial offer.

In June 1993 he surprisingly lost to Mike Dixon, known only for his good taker skills, by a technical knockout in the second round. In the next fight he boxed against James Warring only a draw, then he lost against Garing Lane, also just a club fighter, again prematurely. He could never recover from that. In 1994 he lost his NABF title to Joe Hipp high on points. He ended his career in 1999, and made a brief comeback in 2005.
