Alex Hay (actually: Alex Galloway Hay ; born May 10, 1933 in Edinburgh , Scotland ; † July 11, 2011 ) was a respected specialist book author and commentator in the sport of golf and was one of the leading golf teachers in the late 1970s and early 1980s .

Life

Alex Hay, born in Edinburgh in 1933, initially worked on the Scottish Stock Exchange . But his great love was golf from the start . So Hay changed his job and began training as a racket maker at the venerable Ben Sayers company in North Berwick. Then he trained as an assistant to the strict golf pro Bill Shankland at Potters Bar Golf Club in London . Hay got his first independent coaching position at East Herts Golf Club , where he soon gained a good reputation. Further stations followed and his reputation grew steadily. The leading trade magazine Golf Illustrated hired him as a reporter and Alex Hay inspired the golf world with his unmistakable and entertaining style, which made him a fixture and indispensable figure from the The Open Championship broadcast on BBC TV in 1978 until his retirement in 2004. A year earlier, Hay began teaching at the newly established Woburn Golf and Country Club , now one of the UK's most famous golf courses .
