Canouan is an island in the Grenadines , about 30 km southwest of Mustique and belongs to the Caribbean state of St. Vincent and the Grenadines . Canouan is 7.6 km² and has fewer than 2,000 inhabitants. The most important place on the island is Charlestown . There is an airport on the island.

The most important branch of the economy is tourism, especially luxury tourism. There are two large resorts: Raffles Resort with a golf course and casino and the Tamarind .

Around 200 BC The Arawak reached the island and were displaced by the Caribs around 1300 AD . In the inaccessible heights, the Caribs were able to hold their own against the Europeans for a long time, mingling with fled African slaves and being called Black Caribs . They allowed the French a permanent settlement on the island in 1719. In the Treaty of Aachen (1748) , neutrality was agreed for the island between England and France. In 1763 the English claimed the island again for themselves. After some back and forth, the English defeated the Black Caribs in 1797 and deported 5,000 of them to British Honduras .
