Alex Stewart (born June 28, 1964 in London , United Kingdom - † November 16, 2016 ) was a Jamaican boxer . He can be classified as an above-average club fighter ; he never achieved a significant victory, but he was in the ring with many world-class opponents.
As an amateur, he won the bronze medal at the 1983 Pan American Games . At the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles , he was eliminated in the round of 16.
Stewart made his professional debut in May 1987 with a knockout victory over Eric Mitchell. He suffered his first defeat on November 4, 1989 in his 25th fight against the undefeated Evander Holyfield by TKO in the 8th round. A year later, on December 8, 1990, he was defeated by ex-world champion Mike Tyson by breaking off in round 1, in July 1991 to later world champion Michael Moorer in round 4. In April 1992, he lost narrowly and controversially against George Foreman on points, in 1993 again against Evander Holyfield, with whom he went the full distance this time. In 1997 he lost to eventual WBC world champion Oleg Maskayev by knockout in round 7.
He lost his last fight in 1999 against Jorge Luis Gonzales by breaking off in round 2.
Alex Stewart retired from boxing in 1999 and died of a blood clot in his lungs on November 16, 2016 in Mount Vernon , New York, aged 52 .
