The Alexander-von-Humboldt-Gymnasium ( AvH for short ) is a science-mathematically oriented high school in the south (Pomona district) of the city of Neuss , in the Rhine district of Neuss .
history
The Alexander von Humboldt Gymnasium was founded on April 1, 1966 as the second urban boys' gymnasium . The current location has existed since 1969.
The first big changes took place back in 1974: girls were also admitted ( co-education ) and the Reformed upper school was introduced. Following the direction of the eponym Alexander von Humboldt , a scientific and mathematical focus developed. In the 1990s there were further changes.
In order to maintain the offer of the third foreign language and to be able to offer a wide range of courses in the upper level, a cooperation with the neighboring Nelly-Sachs-Gymnasium , the former girls ’s high school nearby, was agreed. In addition, an increased number of registrations from Realschule graduates for the upper secondary school level led to the fact that a special course offer was set up for this clientele in grade 11. In addition, the subject of computer science has been increasingly promoted since 1996 and regularly offered as an advanced course.
School profile
The Alexander von Humboldt-Gymnasium has a strong focus on science and mathematics. This comes into play in the secondary level 1 through the profile class as well as in the secondary level 2 in the course offerings.
In contrast to the old-language and bilingual branches of other grammar schools, this type of profile class is introduced at the Alexander von Humboldt grammar school as one of the first and very few schools in North Rhine-Westphalia. "Das Humboldt" was also one of the very few grammar schools in North Rhine-Westphalia to try out the natural sciences subject planned for 2007 by the red-green state government, which was voted out in 2005 (a joint teaching for natural science subjects that includes biology, chemistry and physics) in grades 5 to 6 , which was withdrawn by the new state government.
The first foreign language is always English, while French and Latin are offered as second foreign languages.
As a special offer for career changers from secondary schools, there are one or two courses in German, mathematics and English each year in grade 11, which have an extra hour per week (i.e. four hours) to enable them to follow up on the high school level.
Scientific profile class
In addition to two normal classes, a mathematics and science class will be set up from the 5th grade onwards, in which the students receive an in-depth study in the form of an additional hour in the natural sciences and mathematics.
This additional hour in grades 5 to 8 is distributed among the subjects as follows:
- Class 5 biology
- Grade 6 physics
- Class 7 chemistry
- Grade 8 math
In October 2008, the grammar school took first place in the Hugo Henkel Prize and won prize money of 7,500 euros.
Differentiation courses in grades 8, 9 and 10
Different mathematical and scientific subject combinations can be chosen within the differentiation courses of grades 8, 9 and 10:
- Mathematics / computer science
- Chemistry / biology
- History / english
- German / Education
- Works and designs
Upper secondary school
In the upper school level , all natural science subjects (biology, chemistry, physics) and computer science are offered in basic courses. Not only mathematics, but also computer science is often referred to as advanced course represented, other science subjects like biology or physics are also represented as an advanced course in general or be set up in cooperation with the neighboring Nelly-Sachs-Gymnasium as advanced courses.
Other foreign languages can also be learned through the cooperation agreement.
whole day
At the beginning of the 2009/10 school year, compulsory all-day teaching was introduced at the Alexander von Humboldt Gymnasium as the only gymnasium in Neuss to date.
School partnerships
- Central High School, Saint Paul, Minnesota
- Lycée Pierre Bayen, Châlons-en-Champagne
- Pskov State Pedagogical University, Pskov
- Nelly-Sachs-Gymnasium , Neuss (cooperation school in the upper level)
building
The building opened in 1969. The Realschule Südstadt and a Catholic secondary school are in the immediate vicinity, which is due to the idea of a co-op school that was never implemented here at the end of the 1960s. The building is used in the evenings by the advanced training college in Neuss , which offers evening courses for the secondary school diploma, the technical college entrance qualification and the Abitur as well as afternoon courses for the university entrance qualification. Organizationally, however, the two schools are completely separate.
A PCB renovation of the building took place from 2010 to 2016. In 2012 the newly built cafeteria and the sports hall were put into operation, which are also used by the Südstadt secondary school.
Sports clubs in the AvH
The SSV Neuss-Reuschenberg has had its sports facility in its basement since the grammar school opened. Other sports clubs also use the premises of the Alexander von Humboldt Gymnasium.
