Alexander Georgijewitsch Ponomarenko ( Russian Александр Георгиевич Пономаренко ; born January 16, 1938 in Moscow ) is a Russian paleontologist and entomologist who specialized in fossil insects (paleoentomology). His author's abbreviation as a biologist is Ponomarenko .

Life

Ponomarenko graduated from Lomonosov University in 1960 and then worked in the Arthropod Laboratory of the Paleontological Institute of the Soviet Academy of Sciences under Boris Borissowitsch Rohdendorf . There he specialized in fossil beetles (Coleoptera). In 1962 he wrote the chapter beetles in a Russian manual of palaeontology with Rohdendorf and in 1967 he received his doctorate with a thesis on archostemata , primitive Mesozoic water beetles. This resulted in a monograph published in 1969. In 1983 his habilitation (historical development of the order Coleoptera) appeared.

From 1969 to 1989 he took part in many expeditions to Mongolia (insects of the Permian and Mesozoic Era), where he also began to be interested in the reconstruction of paleo-biotopes. From the late 1970s he studied the evolution of ecosystems on land (insect faunas, terrestrial aquatic systems) and their species splitting, where he coined terms such as angiospermization and arthropodization . From the 1990s he also turned to early microbe evolution and evolution of microbiota.

In addition to beetles, he also dealt with fossil reticulated winged (Neuroptera), for example from the Jura of the Solnhofen limestone, large winged (Megaloptera), fleas, beaked flies (Mecoptera, for example scorpion flies).

He is Associate Editor of Stratigraphy and Geological Correlation of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Associate Editor of the Paleontological Journal . He publishes the electronic catalog of extinct beetles at the Russian Academy of Sciences.

He was in Japan in the 1970s and did research in Vietnam.
