Alexander Ivanovich Koldunow

Alexander Ivanovich Koldunow ( Russian Александр Иванович Колдунов ; born September 20, 1923 in Moschtschinowo , Smolensk Governorate ; † June 7, 1992 in Moscow ) was a Soviet officer.

Life

Koldunow started flying in the aero club in Reutow . In 1941 he joined the army. He trained as a fighter pilot at the Katschinsk Military Aviation School , which he graduated from in 1943 . Subsequently, in May of the same year, as part of the German-Soviet War , he was transferred to a unit within the Southwest Front (later the 3rd Ukrainian Front ). On August 2, 1944, after 20 victories in the air, as a squadron commander in the 866th IAP (Fighter Pilot Regiment ), he was appointed Hero of the Soviet Union . By the end of the war, Koldunow flew 358 sorties and shot down 46 enemy aircraft in 96 aerial battles.

After the end of the war he was promoted to commander of a fighter regiment, later a division. On February 23, 1948, he was again awarded the golden star of a Hero of the Soviet Union. In November 1970, he received his transfer as commander of the air defense of the Moscow district. In 1971 he was appointed Colonel General of the Aviators. In December 1975 he became deputy commander of the air defense (PWO) and, in 1978, its commander. On October 31, 1984 he became Chief Marshal. He was released in 1987 after Mathias Rust's flight to Moscow.
