Alexander L. Gaeta

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Alexander Luis Gaeta (* 1961 ) is an American physicist.

Gaeta studied physics at the University of Rochester with a bachelor's degree in 1983, a master's degree in 1985 and a doctorate in 1991 with Robert W. Boyd with the dissertation Stochastic and deterministic fluctuations in stimulated Brillouin scattering . In 1992 he became an assistant professor at Cornell University , an associate professor in 1998 and a professor in 2004. From 2011 to 2014 he was the director of the School of Applied Engineering and Physics and from 2013 was Samuel B. Eckart Professor. From 2015 he was David M. Rickert Professor of Applied Physics at Columbia University .

Among other things, he deals with frequency combs, femtosecond laser pulses, nanophotonics, nonlinear propagation in optical waveguides and the generation and processing of light fields for quantum computers and communication.

For 2019 he received the Charles Hard Townes Award for essential contributions to chip-based nonlinear photonics, nonlinear optics in photonic crystal fibers and nonlinear propagation of ultrashort laser pulses (laudation). He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and the Optical Society of America .

In 2010 he co-founded the company PicoLuz with Michal Lipson, Alex Cable.

He has been the founding editor of Optica since 2013.
