Robert William Boyd (born March 8, 1948 in Buffalo , New York ) is an American physicist who deals with nonlinear optics .

Boyd graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a bachelor's degree in 1969 and received his PhD in 1977 from the University of California, Berkeley , under Charles H. Townes . In 1977 he became Assistant Professor and 1987 Professor of Optics at the University of Rochester , where he was M. Parker Givens Professor from 2001 . From 2010 he was a professor at the University of Ottawa on a Canada Excellence Research Chair for nonlinear quantum optics.

From 1983 to 1985 he was visiting scientist at the JET Propulsion Laboratory of Caltech , 1987/88 visiting professor at the University of Toronto and he was visiting scientist at the University of Sussex .

Boyd was one of the first to demonstrate the slow light and fast light phenomena, first demonstrated in Bose-Einstein condensates and atomic vapors, also in solids at room temperature. He developed slow light methods based on coherent oscillations in the occupation populations and with stimulated Brillouin scattering and demonstrated a number of exotic effects such as backward propagation of light and recognized the possibility of using slow light to improve the spectral resolution of interferometers .

Boyd is one of the co-founders of the research field Quantum Imaging , in which quantum properties of light such as quantum entanglement and squeezed light are used to increase the resolution of optical images.

He wrote a textbook on nonlinear optics, investigated novel composite nonlinear optical materials, experimentally demonstrated a redshift predicted by Hendrik Antoon Lorentz as a consequence of local fields in 1991 and investigated four-wave mixing in atomic vapors in 1981 .

In 2009 he received the Willis E. Lamb Prize . In 2010 he received the Humboldt Research Award and in 2014 the Quantum Electronics Award . For 2016 he was awarded the Arthur L. Schawlow Prize for Laser Physics and the Charles Hard Townes Award . He is a Fellow of the Optical Society of America , the American Physical Society and the Royal Society of Canada (2019).

He has been married since 1971 and has two children.
