Alexander Spiess

Alexander Spiess , go too. Sanitary Councilor Alexander Spieß (* 1833 in Frankfurt am Main ; † 1904 ) was a German physician and city ​​doctor for the city of Frankfurt am Main, which, in addition to Stuttgart, employed the first German city doctor.

Career and activity

After studying in Göttingen and completing his doctorate in 1859, Alexander Spieß practiced as a general practitioner in Frankfurt before he was appointed city doctor in 1883. He was a member of the office for the poor, managing director of the poor doctors and distributed the work of the (part-time) school doctors. Since 1876 he was chairman of the Frankfurt doctors' association and secretary of the Frankfurt local branch of the German association for public health care. He also edited the German quarterly publication for public health care.

With the establishment of the city doctor's office, Frankfurt went beyond the obligations of traditional poor relief, the treatment of poor sick people. Originally only entrusted with the medical examination of city officials and employees, Spieß took on other tasks in the field of public health care, medical statistics and expert assessments.

The city of Stuttgart followed in 1888 with the employment of a full-time city doctor. In the rest of Germany, the employment of full-time city doctors did not develop until the beginning of the 20th century.
