The National Library of New Zealand in Wellington

The National Library of New Zealand ( Maori : Te Puna o Aotearoa Mātauranga ) is the National Library of New Zealand . It contains a deposit copy of all books published in New Zealand. The library is a public service institution and is obliged by the National Library of New Zealand Act 2003 to “enrich the cultural and economic life of New Zealand and its exchange with other nations”.

The National Library Act also prescribes the following:

  • Collecting, storing and preserving documents, particularly those related to New Zealand, and making them accessible to the entire New Zealand people in a manner consistent with their documentary heritage status and taonga .
  • To complement and advance the work of other libraries in New Zealand.
  • To work with other institutions that have a similar purpose, including those that form part of the international library community.

It is unique that the New Zealand National Library, unlike other national libraries, has connections to elementary and secondary schools through an extensive school program that includes 15 customer centers and three curriculum information offices nationwide. The deposit copy department is also the ISBN and ISSN agency of New Zealand.

The Central Library is adjacent to the House of Parliament and is opposite the Supreme Court on Molesworth Street in Wellington .

Alexander Turnbull Library

The Alexander Turnbull Library forms part of the National Library and is located in the Wellington branch. It is named after Alexander Horsburgh Turnbull , whose estate from 1918 forms the original part of the collection. In 1919 took over John Carl Andersen as a librarian the library management and led them alongside some extensions to the New Zealand-wide notoriety. Andersen headed the library until 1937.

The library includes the collection of New Zealand scientific documents. Its core consists of a significant collection of works on John Milton and the Pacific region.

The National Library Act continues to stipulate the following with regard to the Alexander Turnbull Library:

  • Preserving, maintaining, developing and developing the library collection for the entire New Zealand people for eternity and in a manner consistent with their documentary heritage status and taonga .
  • Creation of a scientific collection and the services of the Alexander Turnbull Library, particularly in the scientific fields of New Zealand and the Pacific region and rare books.
  • Preparation and maintenance of a collection of documents relating to New Zealand and the New Zealand people.

Since the library itself is now in the National Library, its actual seat, Turnbull House on Bowen Street, is subordinate to the Department of Conservation .
