Alfred Errera

Alfred Errera (* 1886 ; † 1960 ) was a Belgian mathematician.

Errera studied at the Free University of Brussels , where he received his doctorate in 1921 ( Du coloriage des cartes et de quelques questions d'analysis situs ). In his dissertation he introduced the Errera graph, which provides a counterexample for the functioning of the method proposed by Alfred Kempe in the four-color problem. From 1928 to 1956 he was a professor at the Free University of Brussels.

He dealt with topology , such as the theory of polyhedra and the Jordanian curve theorem . He had a seminar on analysis with Théophile Lepage at the University of Brussels .

During the First World War he was involved in the acoustic localization of artillery and gave courses on this at the Royal Military School from 1921 to 1938 .

Guy Hirsch was one of his PhD students .
