Alfred Evers

Alfred "Fred" Evers (born May 13, 1935 in Eupen ; † November 19, 2018 there ) was a Belgian businessman and politician of the Liberal Party for Freedom and Progress (PFF). Evers was a member of various parliaments for several decades and from 1999 to 2004 President of the Parliament of the German-speaking Community . At the local level, he was a long-time member of the city council and from 1977 to 2000 mayor of Eupen. In 2001 he received the title of "Honorary Mayor".

Life

The political career of Alfred Evers began in 1974, when he was in the basis of a reasonable list compilation for the Liberal Party PFF House of Representatives was elected. There he was able to represent the interests of the East Belgian German-speaking minority and was involved in various legislative initiatives that ultimately resulted in the creation of the German-speaking community . Evers' parliamentary career led him from the Chamber of Deputies to the Senate and the Walloon Parliament and finally to the Parliament of the German-speaking Community, where he was chairman from 1999 to 2004.

At the local level, Fred Evers won the mayoral election of Eupen in 1977 and held that office for 24 years. In 2000 Evers experienced a defeat against his Christian-social successor Elmar Keutgen ( CSP ) and then withdrew from local politics. In October 2001 Evers received the certificate of the appointment as honorary mayor, confirmed by royal decree on June 21, 2001.

In 2012, after the PFF was again able to form a majority in the Eupen city council, Evers started a comeback as a finance and cultural jury under Mayor Karl-Heinz Klinkenberg (PFF). For health reasons, Evers resigned from this position about a year later and definitely ended his political career.

Professionally, Evers worked as an administrator for various companies in the transport and logistics sector and temporarily headed the Belgian road transport association Febetra (French Fédération belge des transporteurs routiers ). He was also a member of the board of directors of the so-called community holding , a holding company of numerous Belgian communities, which was a shareholder in the Dexia -bank, which was shaken by the financial crisis .
