Alfred Jones (boxer)

Alfred "Al" Jones (born October 1, 1946 in Detroit ) is a retired boxer from the United States and bronze medalist at the 1968 Olympic Games in the middleweight division.

Boxing career

Alfred Jones was around 1.75 m tall during his competitive career and boxed middleweight (up to 75 kg). He won the National Golden Gloves in 1965 , the US championships in 1968 and the US Olympic qualification in 1968. On August 16, 1968, he also defeated Ewald Wichert from Germany in an international match .

In October 1968 he finally took part in the 19th Summer Olympics in Mexico City , where he was able to win a bronze medal. He defeated Marcelo Quiñones from Peru 5-0, Raúl Marrero from Cuba 5-0 and Simon Georgiew from Bulgaria 4-1, before losing 4-1 in the semifinals to British Christopher Finnegan .

In 1969 he switched to the professional camp and won twelve fights in a row within less than two years, seven of them by knockout. After a heavy knockout defeat against Dave Thach in February 1971, he resigned from active boxing.
