At 25 km, the Algae River is the third longest river system in Antarctica . In Wilkesland , East Antarctica , it connects a series of epiglacial lakes on the southern edge of the Bunger Hills with Algae Lake in the center. The river flows into the Transkriptsii Gulf on the Knox coast .

The Antarctic Names Committee of Australia named it in 2003 based on the name of the lake of the same name.
