The Algae Lake ( Russian Озеро Фигурное Osero Figurnoje , German , 'Curly Lake' ) is a narrow lake with numerous bends in the East Antarctic Wilkesland . It is east-west in the ice-free Bunger Hills . The Bay of Polish Geodesists is one of its numerous bays.
An initial mapping based on aerial photographs taken during Operation Highjump (1946–1947) incorrectly identified the lake as a bay . The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names therefore initially named it Algae Inlet . It is named after microalgae and cyanobacteria , which color the water of the lake and the meltwater pools as well as the saltwater bays and canals in the Bunger Hills differently. Participants in the Second Soviet Antarctic Expedition (1956–1958) under Alexei Trjoschnikow identified the supposed bay as a lake.
