Algebraic Linguistics

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Algebraic Linguistics is a part of mathematical linguistics , of using formal methods (to algebra , theoretical computer science , formal logic / mathematical logic , set theory ) to the formalization of grammars effort: "The algebraic linguistics has the task to formalize the grammar" . Accordingly, it plays an important role in the development of formal grammars, especially the generative grammar of Noam Chomsky and the category grammar of Yehoshua Bar-Hillel and others. It is about the development of consistent models and the highest possible precision. Gross & Lentin (1971, foreword) see algebraic linguistics in the tradition of the Grammaire générale et raisonnée ( general grammar ), since when studying the formal properties of languages they ignore the particular peculiarities of the individual languages.

The term algebraic linguistics

The term algebraic linguistics has been around since 1964, when the Czech linguists P. Sgall and L. Nebeský used it. It also largely superseded the term theory of language models, which originated in the USSR (Ivić 1971: 226).
