Ali Çetinkaya

Ali Çetinkaya (* 1878 in Afyonkarahisar , † February 21, 1949 in Istanbul ) was a Turkish officer and politician. He was a member of the Turkish National Assembly for several legislative terms, from 1934 to 1939 Minister of Public Works and 1939/40 Minister of Transport of his country.

Life

Ali Çetinkaya was born in 1878 to Şerşifoğlu Ahmed Efendi and Fatma Hanım. His father died early. Ali Çetinkaya attended the Bursa Military School ( Bursa Askerî İdadisi ) and then the Ottoman Army Academy Mekteb-i Füsûn-u Harbiyye-i Şâhâne . In 1898 he graduated there as second lieutenant ( Mülâzım-ı Sani ). During the First World War he served in the Caucasus , Galicia and Tripoli . As a member of the Young Turks , he was involved in the Committee for Unity and Progress .

During the occupation of Izmir by Greek troops on May 15, 1919, he was lieutenant colonel and commander of the 172nd infantry regiment in nearby Ayvalık , which was under the command of the 56th division of Hürrem Bey. Ali Çetinkaya played a crucial role in the first phase of the Greco-Turkish War , as he opened the first battle at İlk Kurşun Tepesi on May 29, 1919 with an order to shoot. However, he was only able to stop the advance of the Greeks briefly. Today the island of Alibey Adası off the coast bears Ayvalık Çetinkaya's name.

After the war, Çetinkaya was a member of the Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi and a member of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey . He was Minister for Public Works from 1934 to 1939 and Minister of Transport from 1939/40.
