Ali İsmail Korkmaz

Ali İsmail Korkmaz (born March 18, 1994 in Antakya , Hatay ; † July 10, 2013 in Eskişehir ) was a Turkish student, protester and victim of the Gezi protests in Turkey in 2013.

Life

Ali İsmail Korkmaz was born to Şahab ​​and Emel Korkmaz. His older brother was Gürkan, the sisters Melike and Aylin. The family was of Arab origin and belonged to the Alawites . Ali İsmail's father had to work far from home to earn a living. Ali İsmail attended the Ekinci Nevzat Ceylan Elementary School and the Özbuğday Lisesi Middle School. He then graduated from high school. Ali İsmail then studied English to become a teacher at the Pedagogical Faculty of Anadolu Üniversitesi in Eskişehir. He was in his first year of study.

Ali İsmail Korkmaz took part in actions of the protest movement. After protests he was ambushed on the night of June 2nd and 3rd and he was so badly mistreated with clubs and kicks - even when he was already on the ground - that he succumbed to his injuries about five weeks later. The cause of death was a cerebral haemorrhage, which was favored by the fact that Korkmaz was being treated with anticoagulants . The brutal assault was recorded by various surveillance cameras. One recording was confiscated by the police and then deleted. According to TÜBITAK's expertise , it turned out that the recording was dubbed four times.

Ali İsmail Korkmaz did not immediately fall into a coma, but presented himself to the hospital (Mavi Hastanesi) a few hours after the attack and stated that he had fallen off the stairs as he was evidently afraid of police persecution. Korkmaz received initial treatment and was transferred to another hospital (Yunus Emre Devlet Hastanesi) and filed a complaint the same day in the presence of his lawyer. On the evening of June 3rd, he presented himself at Eskişehir State Hospital and was already suffering from speech disorders and clouded consciousness. After a tomography, he was admitted to the university hospital as an emergency. There he was operated on that same evening. He passed away about five weeks later.

Ali İsmail Korkmaz's death caused a lot of media coverage. There were numerous protests. The trial in Kayseri was also accompanied by protests and watched by numerous media representatives. In Kayseri in 2014, eight people, including four police officers, had to answer for the crime in the 3rd Large Criminal Chamber. One police officer and four other people were in custody. On January 21, 2015, the 3rd Chamber for Serious Crimes in Kayseri pronounced the verdict. Two police officers were sentenced to more than 10 years in prison. Two officers were acquitted. The four civilian defendants received prison terms ranging from 3 years, 4 months and 6 years, 8 months.
