The Turkish Institute for Scientific and Technological Research ( Turkish : Türkiye Bilimsel ve Teknolojik Araştırma Kurumu ) based in Ankara, abbreviated to TÜBİTAK , is the most important institution for the organization of research and development in Turkey.

The aim of the institute, founded in 1963 by President Cemal Gürsel , is the development, promotion, management and coordination of research and development work in the field of fundamental and applied sciences. The administratively and financially autonomous institution with its seat in Ankara advises the government on the definition of science and technology policy and partly finances research and development work at universities as well as in the public and private sectors. TÜBİTAK also takes on the secretarial services of the "High Council for Science and Technology" ( Turkish : Bilim ve Teknoloji Yüksek Kurulu , BTYK for short), which determines the Turkish research policy and which consists of the responsible ministers and representatives of the institutions concerned and is headed by the Prime Minister .

TÜBITAK publishes information services, scientific publications and the popular scientific journal Bilim ve Teknik . TÜBITAK also awards grants and prizes and organizes the Turkish Science Olympiads ( Ulusal Bilim Olimpiyatları ) every year .

At the end of July / beginning of August 2016, TÜBİTAK offices across the country were searched by the police and 167 employees were dismissed. They are accused of being close to the Gülen movement .
