August Köstner (* 1912 in Bamberg ; † 1982 ibid) was a German wrestler . He was the German free style middleweight champion in 1937.

Career

August Köstner began wrestling as a teenager in Bamberg. He started in both styles, Greco-Roman style and free style, but from 1934 worked mostly in free style.

In 1929 he was German youth champion in Greco-Roman. Style in the class up to 75 kg body weight. In the senior class it lasted until 1935, before it reached the top German class there too. In 1935 he was German runner-up in Greco-Roman. Style and 1936 German runner-up in free style, both in the middleweight division. In qualifying for the Olympic Games in Berlin , he failed in the free style in the middleweight division just to Hans Schedler from Halle .

In 1937 August Köstner was German middleweight champion in free style ahead of Kurt Hoffmann from Greiz and Albert Laudien from Wilhelmshaven . He was then used at the European Free Style Championships in Munich , where he won over the Pole Drzymala. He lost against Jan Pelikan from Czechoslovakia and Ivar Johansson from Sweden and came in 4th place.

The circumstances of that time did not allow him to continue his international career, because from 1938 there were no more European championships in free style due to the unstable political situation and the beginning of the Second World War in 1939.

August Köstner was again German runner-up in 1941 in the heavyweight division behind Kurt Hornfischer from Nuremberg . In 1949 he also fought for the German team runner- up with the KSV Bamberg team. In the two end caps they lost 7: 9 against Heros Dortmund . He celebrated his last success in 1950 when he took 3rd place in the heavyweight division behind Max Leichter from Eckenheim and Willi Liebern from Dortmund at the German championship.

August Köstner, who ran a butcher's shop in Bamberg, intensively supported his association, KSV Bamberg, after his active days. Son Hans Köstner also worked as a wrestler and was a top German wrestler, especially in the youth and junior division.
