Others

In the spring of 2009, the magazine caused quite a stir in the Turkish media as well as abroad. Because of a planned article on Charles Darwin's 200th birthday, the editor-in-chief Çiğdem Atakuman was initially removed from office. The vice-chairman of Tübitak, chemistry professor Ömer Cebeci, was quoted verbatim: "I can't see Darwin on the cover." Behind this were religious reservations against the founder of the scientific theory of evolution, reported the dpa . Only after a considerable uproar in the Turkish media took place did those responsible for Tübitak give in and rehabilitate the editor-in-chief.
