Alia al-Hussein of Jordan
Queen Alia al-Hussein ( Arabic علياء الحسين, DMG ʿAlyāʾ al-Ḥusain ; * December 25, 1948 in Cairo , Egypt as Alia Baha ad-Din Tuqan /علياء بهاء الدين طوقان / ʿAlyāʾ Bahāʾ ad-Dīn Ṭūqān ; † February 9, 1977 in Jordan ) was the third wife of Hussein I of Jordan.
Life
Alia was the daughter of Baha ad-Din Tuqan , a former ambassador, and spent much of her childhood traveling. She attended Church School in London with her younger brother Ali and studied in Rome and Chicago as well as political science with minor subjects in social psychology and public relations at Hunter College in New York. In 1971 she moved to Jordan and worked there for Royal Jordanian Airlines . During the preparations for the first International Water Ski Festival in September 1972, she met the king and married him on December 24, 1972. From then on she carried the title Queen Alia al-Hussein. Alia died in a helicopter crash in Amman. As a result, the new Ammans Airport, opened in 1983, was named after Alia ( Queen Alia International Airport ).
