action

The Alice franchise features the main character, Alice McKinley - always called Al by her father and older brother - as she grows up in Silver Spring, Maryland. Her mother died of leukemia when Alice was four or five years old; she no longer remembers it exactly. Alice initially struggled to find her way in a male household, but her father and brother Lester promise to be open and honest with Alice. She has very few memories of her mother; she often confuses her with her aunt. She seems to bear a remarkable resemblance to hers, especially her auburn hair.

Other characters include Alice's two best friends Pamela and Elisabeth, her first serious friend Patrick, her next boyfriend Sam, her prudish aunt Sally, Lester's many friends and her 7th grade literature teacher, Miss Sylvia Summers. Alice tries to marry her father to her - eventually with success.

The Alice series covers many topics including relationships, dates, sex, friendship, life problems, family, God and the world. The books were on the ALA list of most attacked books for several years ; Because of their theming of sexuality, the books landed at number 1 on the list in 2003.

Characters

  • Alice Kathleen McKinley is the protagonist and narrator of the series. She is an intelligent and open-minded girl. Her mother died of leukemia when Alice was four or five years old. In junior high school she is a member of the photography club and in high school she becomes a reporter for the school newspaper. Alice wants to be either a psychiatrist or a psychologist.
  • Benjamin McKinley is Alice's father and is usually the perfect person for Alice to seek advice. At the beginning of the series, he is portrayed as a shy person. He works in a music store, the "Melody Inn".

She is one of Alice's three best friends.
  • Pamela Jones is an open-minded blonde who Alice meets in 6th grade. When it comes to relationships, she initially commutes between two boys: Mark Stedmeister and Brian Brewster. They come back together later. Then, early in high school, the relationship comes to an end because a girl named Penny is flirting with Patrick in her class and he doesn't try to stop Penny. His relationship with Penny lasted no more than a few months while that with Alice lasted more than two years. Patrick had always liked Alice since the relationship ended and asked her if she wanted to go to the ball with him.
  • Penny is initially a fun, nice girl for Patrick Long. At first she worked in an ice cream parlor where Patrick and Penny met. Because of Alice's jealousy, Patrick separated from her and later he was with Penny, but only for a few months.
