Alicia Comyn , Countess of Buchan, Baroness Beaumont (* before 1296, † before August 10, 1349 ), was a Scottish noblewoman .

Life

Alicia Comyn came from the Scottish Comyn family . Her father was Alexander Comyn, Sheriff of Aberdeen , the third son of Alexander Comyn, 6th Earl of Buchan ; her mother was Joan, the eldest daughter of the English nobleman William Latimer, 1st Baron Latimer . When her uncle John Comyn, 7th Earl of Buchan, had been ostracized in Scotland for resisting Robert I the Bruce and had died without descendants on his estates in England, she was his next rightful heir. As such, she acquired his lands in England and claims to the forfeited title of Earl of Buchan . The associated lands in Scotland remained confiscated by the Crown.

Before July 14, 1310, she was not yet of legal age, married to the English nobleman Henry de Beaumont, 1st Baron Beaumont of the House of Brienne . Iure uxoris claimed the office of Constable of Scotland and from December 1312, when his wife came of age, also her title of Earl of Buchan .

As with most women of this time, little is known about her further life and is partly inferred from the data of her husband. In 1314 Henry fought on the English side at the Battle of Bannockburn , after which he was "disinherited" by Robert I. The couple spent most of the following years either on their English possessions or in France.

Between 1330 and 1332 several unsuccessful attempts by the English King Edward III. instead of persuading the Scottish King David II to restore the earldom and all associated possessions. Henry de Beaumont attended Scottish Parliament sessions in 1334 as the earl of Buchan confirmed by England . After Henry's death in 1340, neither Alicia nor her son John, who inherited them in 1349, succeeded in having their title in Scotland confirmed or their lands returned.

Alicia's marriage to Henry de Beaumont had ten children:
