Alick Buchanan-Smith

Alick Laidlaw Buchanan-Smith PC (born April 8, 1932 in Edinburgh , † August 29, 1991 ) was a Scottish politician and Minister of the Conservative Party .

Education and family

The second son of Alick Drummond Buchanan-Smith, Baron Balerno , and Mary Kathleen Smith became a soldier in 1951 in the regiment of the "Gordon Highlanders".

Member of the House of Commons

Buchanan-Smith ran initially unsuccessfully for the constituency of Fife West in 1959 . In 1964 he was elected to the House of Commons for the constituency of North Angus and Mearns and represented that constituency there until 1983. After the constituencies were revised, his constituency was abolished. He was then a member of the House of Commons for the constituency of Kincardine and Deeside until his death .

Member of the government

Together with George Younger and Hector Monro , he worked from 1970 to 1974 in the cabinet of Edward Heath as Parliamentary Undersecretary of State in the Ministry of Scotland. In Margaret Thatcher's cabinets , he was Minister of State in the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries from 1979 to 1983, and then Minister of State in the Ministry of Energy until 1987. In both offices he was the representative of Minister Peter Walker . In 1981 he was accepted into the Privy Council .

In memory of him, the "Alick Buchanan Smith Spirit of Enterprise Award" is presented, which is intended to promote companies with new ideas and local reference.
