Alkanediones

Diacetyl , smallest alkanedione

The alkanediones form a subgroup of the ketones or the diketones . They are derived in name and structure from the alkanes and contain two keto groups . They carry straight or branched alkyl groups . They do not contain any other heteroatoms or multiple bonds .

If instead it only contains one keto group, one speaks of alkanones .
