Alkane yeasts

Various types of yeast that can use n- alkanes as a source of energy and carbon are referred to as alkane yeasts . The mushrooms grow on petroleum fractions and can break down the alkanes they contain. Important species of this artificially composed group are for example Candida tropicalis , Yarrowia lipolytica as well as Pichia and Rhodotorula species.
