Location of Libourne

The Allée couverte of Roquefort is located on the private grounds of the Chateau Roquefort , west of Lugasson , in the Entre deux mers , near Libourne in the east of the Gironde department in France .

It is a very long system (the longest in Aquitaine ) of the "Allées girondines" type. The east-west oriented gallery is about 14 meters long, with 22 lateral supporting stones. Four cap stones and the end stone with small bowls ( French cupules ) are also preserved . Such stones are called pierres aux écuelles or pierres à cupules in French . The long hill that covered the complex is still partially there, but overgrown with trees, the roots of which extend into the chamber and cause damage.

The first excavations were carried out in 1922 under the direction of Father Labrie. However, there is no report on the results of his work. A second excavation took place in 1977.

The menhirs , the dolmens of Bignon and the Allée couverte of Pitray are nearby .
