All Star Comics (Eng.) Was the title of a comic series that the American comic publisher All-American Publications published between 1940 and 1951.

The series, which in the 1940s was one of the most successful and best-selling titles on the American comic market, mainly featured science fiction and adventure stories, particularly those that focused on so-called superhero characters.

Release history

The concept for the All Star Comics was developed in late 1939 / early 1940 by publishing editors and authors Gardner Fox and Sheldon Mayer . The first edition of the new series was finally launched in the summer of 1940. By February / March 1951, fifty-six more issues followed, so that the series reached a total of fifty-seven issues. While the first three issues of the series appeared on a quarterly basis, all later issues until the discontinuation of All Star Comics - which resulted from declining sales in the early 1950s - were published every two months.

After the All Star Comics were discontinued in 1951, DC began releasing the All Star Western series which continued the numbering of the All Star Comics , so that the first edition of the All Star Western was named # 58. The All Star Western reached another 61 issues until the series was discontinued in 1961 with issue # 119.

In 1976, DC began publishing the All Star Comics again, picking up on the numbering of the old series and starting the first edition of the new All Star Comics - excluding the numbering of the All Star Westerns with # 58. The series ran for almost two years before it was discontinued in 1978 with issue # 74. She later produced two offshoots, namely All Star Squadron and Infinity Inc.

Content

All Star Comics was originally launched as a so-called anthology series with changing content. The original fifty-seven editions of All Star Comics have been reprinted in eleven volumes under the title All Star Comics Archives since the mid-1990s in the DC Comics Archives Edition series . Issues # 58-74 of All Star Comics published in the 1970s were reissued as Justice Society Vol. 1 (# 58-67) and Vol. 2 (# 68-74) as Tradepaperbacks in 2006/2007.
