All You Need Is Kill is a Japanese light novel in the military science fiction genre by Hiroshi Sakurazaka from 2004. It was illustrated by Yoshitoshi ABe .

action

The story is told from the perspective of Keiji Kiriya, a recruit to the airmobile infantry in artificial exoskeletons of the United Defense Force , who fights against the mysterious, alien race of the Mimics who are besieging the earth. Keiji is killed on his first combat mission, but some inexplicable phenomenon wakes him up the day before the battle. This phenomenon continues and he realizes that he is trapped in a time warp in which he continues to die and rise again. Desperate, Keiji tries to change his fate by improving his fighting skills with every time warp.

Characters

  • Keiji Kiriya ( キ リ ヤ ・ ケ イ ジ , Kiriya Keiji ) is an inexperienced recruit in the United Defense Force . He finds himself in a time warp since he was killed on the battlefield and has lived through it again and again since then. Through these repetitions, he gathers experience in training and combat in order to ultimately become a good soldier.
  • Rita Vrataski ( リ タ ・ ヴ ラ タ ス キ , Rita Vuratasuki ) is a member of the US Special Forces . Highly decorated and unparalleled in battle. She is revered as a hero throughout the world. In reality, like Keiji, she was trapped in a time warp and was able to develop such fighting skills.
  • Shasta Raylle ( シ ャ ス タ ・ レ イ ル , Shasuta Reiru ) is Rita's mechanic, a bespectacled woman who collects gashapon (Japanese vending machine toys ).
  • Ferrell Bartolome ( バ ル ト ロ メ ・ フ ェ レ ウ , Barutorome Fereu ) is Keiji's platoon leader. He is an overly fitness man who cares about his subordinates.

The book was published in Japan on December 18, 2004 ( ISBN 4-08-630219-5 ) by Shūeisha's light novel imprint Super Dash Bunko. The book was nominated in 2005 for the Japanese Seiun Prize , but Yūichi Sasamoto's Ariel had to admit defeat.

An English translation was published on July 21, 2009 ( ISBN 978-1-421-52761-1 ) by Viz Medias Imprint Haikasoru, and as Edge of Tomorrow on April 29, 2014 ( ISBN 978-1-421-56087-8 ).

In Tokyopop on 16 June 2014 (published ISBN 978-3-8420-1057-4 ) a German version.

Adaptations

filming

All You Need Is Kill was filmed by director Doug Liman under the name Edge of Tomorrow . The main roles were played by Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt . The film was released in theaters in late May 2014.

Manga

A manga adaptation of All You Need Is Kill was published from January 9 (issue 5-6 / 2014) to May 29, 2014 (issue 26/2014) in Shūeisha's magazine Young Jump . Based on Sakurazaka's template, Ryūsuke Takeuchi created the script for the manga, while the drawings are from Takeshi Obata . The chapters were also summarized in two anthologies ( Tankōbon ).

Tokyopop published the first volume in German on June 16, 2014 ( ISBN 978-3-8420-1055-0 ), while the second volume followed on October 13, 2014 ( ISBN 978-3-8420-1056-7 ).

Graphic novel

Haikasoru also published an adaptation as a graphic novel , with the script by Nick Mamatas and the drawings by Lee Ferguson. The volume was published on May 6, 2014 ( ISBN 978-1-421-56081-6 ).
